Herbs and pregnancy

Herbs and Pregnancy, prefect together

by Kimberly Gallagher

herbs and pregnancyHerbs and pregnancy are two of my favorite topics, so I’m delighted to have the opportunity to introduce this part of our web site.

Being a happy mother of two, I have experienced pregnancy, birth and mothering first hand.  I feel lucky to have had the knowledge and resources to herbally nourish and heal my children and myself.  Pregnancy, for me was definitely a time when I craved extra nurturing, and nourishment.

It was also a time when I was very in touch with my body, aware of the needs of my growing baby and my body’s own needs.  I found it very empowering to call on the healing and nourishing powers of the plants to help fulfill these needs.

I am excited to offer the following pages on herbs and pregnancy, so that you too may access the gifts of the herbs throughout your pregnancy and early parenting experiences.

There are several ways that herbs can help support you through your pregnancy.

• Looking to get pregnant? Click here for fertility herbs and how to use them safely and soundly.

• They can provide daily nourishment when taken as a standard brew or infusion or when added fresh to your meals. Herbs contain a wide variety of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need for optimum health and when you drink an infusion or eat the herbs in your meals, your body can easily assimilate the nutrients because they are coming in a whole and natural form. Click here to read more about making standard brews.

• The herbs can also address a particular health challenge that comes up during your pregnancy. There are basic herbal remedies for conditions like morning sickness, heartburn, iron deficiency, and muscle cramps and aches.  The herbs can reduce the effects of the symptoms and support your body in healing the root causes of these various conditions.

• Herbs can also be used at the end of a pregnancy to support the birth process. Herbs can help in many birthing situations like initiating labor, ripening the cervix, addressing post-partum hemorrhage, and vaginal pain following birth.

• After your baby has arrived, herbs can continue to support both you and your newborn in the early days of parenting. Herbs can help with lactation, post-partum depression, and sore nipples. They can also provide options for dealing with such conditions as jaundice, colic and thrush. Click here for Kids and Babes remedies.

• Finally, herbs can nurture and pamper you through your pregnancy and early parenting days. Herbal baths, massage oils, and herbal skin treatments can be relaxing and can help you feel beautiful through all the changes in your body and in your life.  And let’s face it; beautiful, relaxed, loving parents are the best! Herbs and pregnancy mix well!

So, with each page I add, I am inviting you to call on the herbs, and enjoy their support through your pregnancy, as I did through mine.

With both my pregnancies, I was low on iron, so I called on stinging nettle for help. I drank standard brews with stinging nettle as a primary ingredient each day. I ate nettles in all kinds of foods like lasagna and soups throughout nettle season.

Both pregnancies, I was able to rely on nettles rather than resorting to iron supplements with all of their unpleasant side effects.
